RSU gets on board with #QR code use

“It’s like an Easter egg hunt. People want to know where it takes them,” said Randy Riggs, a graphic designer who has designed some of the school’s QR codes.

Sites like Google generate a QR code and then it can be manipulated to add logos or designs to make it more unique to RSU, Riggs said.

RSU has already begun using QR codes on athletic schedule posters that take users to a site to download the RSU Hillcats mobile application, in media guides that direct people to updated rosters and statistics, on advertisements around campus that take people to a student survey, and on brochures that take users to the residential life website that has virtual tours of facilities.

“You get much more information,” Riggs said of the technology that can also be used in classrooms.

Having students actually use their cell phones in education, instead of putting them away during class, can actually be beneficial, Riggs said.

“Everyone has a cell phone,” he said. “(QR codes) are quicker, and it stays with the students wherever they go.”

Riggs said he can see it being used by professors to link to supplemental readings
or research papers that could be condensed to QR codes.
