Over lunch recently at a downtown restaurant named for a clothing designer, we asked the 40-year-old filmmaker to name the 5 most egregious moments in product placement. Spurlock obliged:
2. "You've got to go online and look at all the 'Days of Our Lives' product placements, where literally in the middle of this soap opera, they will go into commercial breaks. It's absolutely spectacular and terrible."
Spurlock describes an episode in which a woman working at a bar is complaining to her sister about something before saying ...
Bartender: "I'm sorry. I've got cramps, all right? I'm tired, really tired." (She goes behind bar.)
Sister: "Hey, what are you doing back there?"
Bartender (reaching under bar): "Looking for this." (She holds up Midol Complete box.)
Sister: "Midol."
(Cut to close-up of Midol box on bar.)
Bartender: "Yeah, I got to tell you, running between work and the hospital, I don't have time to go to the drugstore, so what do I do? Keep a box of this right here for emergencies. It relieves the cramps, relieves the bloating. Yeah, I'm gonna be, uh, back to normal before we know it." Read More
