Numerous Colorado businesses and organizations — including libraries, music bands, software makers, financial institutions and colleges — are incorporating the technology into marketing campaigns and sign placements.

"I don't know if they'll be around in 10 years or five years, but right now they're becoming much more common," said SoundRabbit guitarist Chris Anton, whose band is using the codes as a promotional tool.

The Denver area acoustic-rock band has printed 400 T-shirts featuring four QR codes. When the images are scanned, an MP3 of one of the band's songs downloads onto the user's smartphone.

At the University of Colorado at Boulder's Norlin Library, 2D codes appear where you might expect a paper sign with a phone number or a reference map. The codes lead to resources such as digital maps of the library and online dictionaries.

Alison Hicks, a humanities librarian at CU-Boulder, said the technology helps get "people from the physical to the virtual without having to type a really long URL."

Scanning one of the library's 50 or so codes also directly dials the help-desk phone line.

"It's a really old building and it's kind of confusing," Hicks said of Norlin. "So we just wanted to give an extra way for people to get help and to find stuff."
