When are you NOT influenced by advertising? “When you are asleep,” said Ralph Nader, a consumer advocate in Oscar-nominated director Morgan Spurlock’s “Perrific!” new documentary “POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold,” opening at select theaters today (April 22, 2011), then spreading to more theaters each week.

A lot of advertising are untrue, but is advertising all bad? I asked Spurlock, “Do you think art and commerce are very much linked? I do. If you have art but not commerce, you might end up like the famous sunflower painter…” He laughed and immediately followed by saying “or an un-famous sunflower painter.” “There is always a link between art and commerce, going back centuries and centuries, all the way back to Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel. These were not acts of artistic endeavor. These people are hired to create art, just like filmmakers are hired to make films today. I hope that you are able to maintain a creative vision and artistic integrity that will enable you to still have a voice. What made this movie work is to have people come and pay for the work and (filmmakers) still be able to tell the story that we want to be able to tell.”
