The biggest barrier to the technology's adoption used to be the low penetration of smartphones and dismal data speeds in the country. However with the advent of 3G and the rapidly-falling prices of smartphones this is soon changing.
"We are heading towards a more complex era where consumers will be surrounded by a very large number of websites providing information in the form of news reports, editorial reviews, or advertisements that compare product features and prices. This trend will pick up going forward as private operators roll out 3G services and the proportion of users accessing high speed Internet data services through their mobile devices rises," says Naveen Mishra, lead telecoms analyst, IDC India.
The rise of smartphones and the launch of 3G services represent a perfect storm that could drive QR code adoption. The question is: will enterprises bite?
